The freedom of not caring what people think can only be believed once you’ve experienced it! As a recovering perfectionist and people pleaser, I can’t believe how incredible my life is now that I don’t care what other people think anymore. Yes there are days when those thoughts creep back in, but I now have the tools to escort them out. It never occurred to me how much I was missing out on by caring so much what people might think. Here is what I’ve learned by changing my mindset, and the incredible freedom it has brought me.
Freedom Of Not Caring Benefits:
- Get to wear what you want.
- Get to pursue your dreams.
- Get to create the life you want.
- Get to do what you want.
- Get to enjoy life again.
Here are just a few examples of the incredible benefits you get by not caring what other people think. I think we have all experienced the feelings of intimidation and not feeling good enough around others. There have been times I have stayed home from parties, because I got overwhelmed about what I would wear. Several books I started writing remain unfinished, because I was concerned about what others would say. There are many career paths I wanted to pursue, people I wanted to befriend, hobbies I wanted to try, but didn’t because of what others would say.
Worrying about what others might say has prevented a lot of great inventions, art, music, and ideas from being introduced to the world. This is a real shame, as we will never know what great cures and inventions have been prevented from existing because of this. Your contributions to the world won’t be realized if you are afraid of what others may think. What may be common sense and obvious to you, may not have been thought about by someone else. So, the next time you are asked for your opinion; share it. It may be the missing piece that creates the next great breakthrough!
Wearing What You Want:
This may seem like a laughable benefit, but think about all the fussing you’ve done in your life about what you were wearing! How many parties, or gatherings have you skipped out on because you were afraid of what others would say? How many outfits have never left your closet, because you were worried about the response you would get? I had no idea how amazing it would feel to just put on what was comfortable, and leave the house. I dare you to try it – you’ll be amazed at how empowering it is!
When you think about it, what does is really matter if others don’t like it? If you like it, and it’s legal, it really doesn’t matter what others think. They have the power to decide what they want to wear, and you have the power to choose what you like to wear. Embrace that power and go with it! The greatest masterpieces in fashion were created by people who didn’t care what others thought. They created what was in their heart and mind, and put it out there.
Pursue Your Dreams:
Pursuing your dreams is one of the most empowering things you can do. When you think about it, we only get one life to live. What’s the benefit of living a small, ordinary life? There isn’t one. I truly believe that God puts dreams in our hearts so we can fulfill His will for our lives. It’s in the pursuit of our dreams that we learn the things God wants us to learn to serve Him and help those around us. You are not fulfilling God’s plans for you by playing small. You are denying the world of the great gifts God gave you.
The best way to fulfill your dreams is to stop caring about what others will think. You have your own individual path to take, so don’t worry if your path doesn’t look like everyone else’s. It’s ok if they have different opinions about what you should do. They are just opinions, not facts written in stone. You get to decide what you do in this life, so you might was well make it spectacular!
Create The Life You Want:
One of the greatest benefits of not caring what others think is creating the life you want to live. We live in a very exciting time in history. There are very few limits on what you can do in life. The internet allows us to get University degrees without even stepping into a classroom! It also allows us to access unlimited information with a few keystrokes. There are very few positions in this world that you cannot attain, if you have the perseverance to do it. So don’t let the opinion of others stop you from achieving your dreams!
Not everyone has to like what you do. As a people pleaser this is the hardest reality to embrace. I want everyone to love me and approve of everything I do. I’ve realized that’s not reasonable. Just like I don’t like everyone I meet, not everyone is going to like me. The same goes for you. As hard as you try, some people will simply not like you or what you do. Accepting this fact will help you get past caring what people think.
Do What You Want To Do:
Doing what you want to do is not selfish, as long as it’s legal and won’t hurt others. The greatest barrier to doing what makes your heart sing is caring what others will think. The freedom you will experience by not caring and doing it anyway is exhilarating. Every time I break through the negative thoughts and do it anyway, I am blown away at what I accomplish! Realizing what I am capable of fuels the next step in my journey, and each step gets easier.
Stepping outside your boundaries will propel you to bigger things too! Breaking down each imaginary wall, reveals a whole new world of possibilities. I am not the person I was five years ago. Becoming the person I am today, one baby step at a time, has provided a new vista that is so much greater than I thought possible. I am now doing things I never thought possible five years ago. Releasing my need to please everyone around me, and caring what they would think, is how I gained this new freedom.
Enjoy Life Again:
The greatest benefit of not caring is enjoying life again. Playing small kept me very unfulfilled and unhappy. Allowing myself to use the gifts God gave me, coupled with not allowing others to hold me back, led me to embrace life again! Some people think that being a Christian means you have to live a miserable life. Nothing is further than the truth! The Bible says in John 10:10 “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” Jesus wants us to have an abundant and happy life! By caring what others think, we are preventing Jesus from giving us the life He wants for us.
The simple fact is: people aren’t thinking about you as much as you think they are. One of the things that held me back from starting my YouTube channel was what people would say. To this day, none of the nasty things I thought people would say have happened! This experience has shown me how much caring what other’s think has held me back. In response, I simply decided to stop caring what people may think and do it anyway.
