Doing Something New
Doing something new can be very intimidating, and yet exhilarating!!! Although it is human nature to remain in our comfort zones, we become stagnant when we do. The only way we can grow, is by trying new things and finding out what we’re capable of. There is a big difference between dreaming and doing. Dreaming is wonderful, and I’m a big fan of it, but it’s the doing of it that takes you to the next level. Here are some of the benefits of doing something new!
- Growth
- Higher Income
- New Friends
- Making the World Better
- Confidence and Higher Self esteem
Growth
Growth in all areas of your life is the biggest benefit of trying something new. This includes: spiritually, physically, intellectually, and relationally. When you put your faith in God that He will help you get to where you want to go, you will grow spiritually. Growing spiritually helps you take that leap of faith you need to try new things. It also helps you grow closer to your creator which allows you to feel safe and protected. Trying new sports helps you grow physically, as you develop new muscles, and a healthy lifestyle. Achieving new milestones in sports also helps your confidence as you realize what you are capable of.
Intellectual growth through reading, analyzing, and education is invaluable. It helps your confidence improve, as you realize you can do so much more than you thought you could. Is there something you’ve always wanted to do, but you don’t know how? Great news, there are tons of people that have done it before you, and will be more than happy to show you! There are no doubt plenty of books on the subject, and with the explosion of the internet and platforms like YouTube there are tons of people that will show you how!
Growing in your ability to enter into relationships with new people is a huge asset. Without relationships from platonic to familial, life is empty. Relationships help you grow in all areas of your life, so if you feel awkward around other people, join the club! You’d probably be surprised that 98% of people feel awkward in social situations. So embrace that awkwardness and get yourself out there. There are clubs or groups available for pretty much anything you may be interested in. Discover what makes your heart sing, and then join a group of like minded individuals. You will be amazed at how your enjoyment of life explodes!
Higher Income
Learning and exploring outside your comfort zone will lead to a higher income. The more you know, the more you can expect to earn. This can lead to a side business outside your regular job, or to a promotion as you get more experienced in your position. Whether you learn about investing to make your money work for you, or you create a multi billion dollar product, the more you learn the more opportunity you have.
Of course, the higher income will only happen when you are willing to step out of your comfort zone and put your ideas and dreams into action. Without taking the steps to make your dreams a reality, they will never come to fruition. This often requires us to do something new in our lives. I completely understand the hesitation to try something new. I’m in the process of learning about marketing and sales. Although I’m learning some great new information, actually doing it is another thing.
Today in fact, I started something completely new that I learned several days ago, but wasn’t ready to do. Although I was hesitant to click send, now I’m excited to see what the results of it will be! It will take a few days to see what happens, but now I have something to look forward too! Now that I’ve done it, I plan to continue doing it, and it will only get easier every time. This is what doing new things looks like, just jumping in and seeing what happens.
New Friends
Maybe you are happy with your friend group and don’t have room for more friends, and that’s awesome if this is you! For a lot of people however, that’s not the case. Making friends doesn’t come easy for everyone, and that’s totally all right. This is where being willing to do new things can make a huge difference. As mentioned above, joining a new club or group that has similar interests as you can be a great way to make new friends.
I met my amazing husband because he was new to the country, and wanted a way to interact with people. He decided to audition for a light opera production because he is an amazing opera singer. We met during auditions, got to know each other during rehearsals and performances, and started dating after the show wrapped. It was his first audition and show, but if he hadn’t been willing to jump outside his comfort zone we would never have met. We both met amazing people in that show that are still in our lives to this day. If either of us hadn’t been willing to do something new, our beautiful kids wouldn’t be here today.
New friends can also lead us to new opportunities we would never have considered before. So if you are looking for a bigger friend group, go for it! You don’t know how you will change someone else’s life or how they may change yours. The adventure is definitely worth it!
Making The World Better
You can change the world with your presence, when you are willing to do new things! Playing small doesn’t serve anyone. God created you for great things, so get out there and do it! If you aren’t sure what that is, then start exploring the things that interest you and make your heart sing. My mother always encouraged me to “share what was in my head, because not everyone knew or thought they way I did.” This was surprising to me as a child, because I just assumed that everyone knew everything that I did. It’s the same for you, something that you think is common sense, may be a brilliant revelation to someone else.
Be willing to put your ideas out there, try new thing, learn what you don’t yet know. We are living in an incredible age of knowledge and invention. In North America and most Western nations, public libraries are free, and education from kindergarten to grade 12 is too. Take advantage of the knowledge you can gain from these resources, and don’t stop learning. As a home schooling parent, my main focus has been on creating a love for learning in my children so they will never stop going after their dreams. If you know where to find the knowledge you need for what you want to accomplish, nothing is out of your grasp.
You may be the one who discovers the cure for cancer, world peace, or ending hunger. Wouldn’t it be fun to be the one that makes millions laugh and feel better about themselves? There is really no end to the contributions big and small that you will make in this world, when you push the boundaries on what you can do. Be willing to give it a try, the world will thank you for it.
Confidence and Higher Self Esteem
The increase of my confidence and self esteem has been one of the biggest benefits I’ve received from doing new things. Every time I prove that I can do something, my confidence grows and it makes it easier to try something else. When I look back to where I was 5 years ago, I’m not the same person. Back then my confidence had crashed, but now I’m back to where I was as a fearless teenager. A lot smarter perhaps, but willing to take risks and this time not care what people think!
Doing new things doesn’t mean you will be great at everything, but it will help you define what you really want to do. When you find things you are good at, you will go after them with even more energy. Even if you aren’t great at it, doing new things will help you to get up and try again when you fall. Getting up and trying again, or trying something different helps you break through the little barriers that can bring you down. Just remember, that you are not a failure until you give up. My refusal to give up means I will never be a failure as long as I keep trying.
In Conclusion:
Doing something new will change your life! If you are bored, or feel an area in your life is lacking, try something new. Be willing to fall, as long as you get up and keep trying you can’t fail! You will be amazed at what you are capable of, and the world will thank you for what you bring to it.
