Perfect days don’t come very often for me. When they do I can’t help but take notice! A perfect day means different things for different people. It’s really a matter of personal preference. For me, it was when the day I scheduled actually just fell into place.
How do you get a perfect day?
I have a very busy household. I homeschool my teenaged children, work 3 part time jobs, and run a household of 4, with 5 pets. Life is busy. My mentor Trish Blackwell is a big proponent of scheduling. I schedule as well, but not as detailed as she does. I consider my day a success when I get everything on my list checked off. Some days this happens, most do not. I’m getting better at handling the days that don’t, and just reschedule.
We all know how life likes to throw us curve balls throughout our day, so when a day actually goes as planned it’s a huge win! The last day I had like that was on December 6, 2023. Yes, I actually recorded the date because it’s that rare! So why would I even want to mention it? Because of the feeling I was left with at the end of the day.
Why schedule?
What gets scheduled gets done. – Quote by Michael Hyatt
That is why you schedule. How detailed you schedule is up to you. My mentor uses a very detailed process for scheduling that even breaks down what she plans to do in that hour she sets aside for a task. I believe it’s referred to as Time Blocking, where you actually break down that hour into smaller tasks with time frames for how long they will take. This way there is no time wasted wondering what you will be working on.
I am not that detailed. Unless there is an exact time for a meeting or appointment, I don’t even put a time beside it. I write the tasks out in order for the day, and mentally decide approximately what time they will be done. It stresses me out if I don’t get something done on “time”, so a more fluid approach works for me. This allows me to adjust for unexpected tasks that may come up to get done. Anything I don’t get done I simply schedule for another day.
How my perfect day felt?
It was the most peaceful and heart warming feeling I’ve ever had. It was just an easy day; no stress, no anxiety. One task just flowed seamlessly into the next. I wish I could give you a detailed description as to how it happened, but I’m not even sure. I haven’t been able to replicate it since. Here are some things that I think may have contributed:
- Going to bed on time the night before.
- Getting up on time in the morning.
- Having a schedule of activities for my day.
- No urgent surprises popped up!
What did my Schedule look like?
As you can see, there were no scheduled appointments or meetings, so there are no times on any of the tasks that day. Each one just flowed into the next, there were no surprises, and by the end of the day they were all checked off. Don’t underestimate how awesome it feels to check something off the list! For me it’s so satisfying.
The challenge is not to get bummed when things aren’t checked off. It’s taken a lot of mental affirmation work to get me to where I am now. I don’t beat myself up anymore, I just reschedule it and congratulate myself for what I did get done. I remind myself that everything I did get done is something I don’t have to do tomorrow!
What did I learn?
I learned that I want to experience perfect days like this more often. My goal is to make them the norm, not the exception. I also learned that by scheduling my tasks, I can keep myself from getting distracted by other tasks. Even writing this I got distracted into something else that I should do. I stopped myself and said, “that’s for later.”, and put my phone back down.
That’s the beauty of scheduling, you can quiet your mind drama down because you’ve already scheduled it to be done. I tend to review the next day’s schedule before I go to bed so I know that I haven’t forgotten anything. This allows me a much better night’s sleep too, as my mind knows that everything is under control. It doesn’t need to wake me up in the middle of the night in a panic, because the task has been scheduled and will be dealt with.
In conclusion.
Perfect days are possible when you take the time to schedule your day. Schedules are not a bad thing, you just need to find the format that works best for you. The important thing about scheduling is to be flexible and forgiving when the day takes it’s own course. You can always get back on track, and of course you can always reschedule! 😉
