Did you know that sea salt is actually good for you? Salt has gotten a bad rep over the years, but new studies have found that the combination of salt and water is very important for your body; when you use the right kind. Sodium is actually required to get glucose and water into the bodies cells. It’s the proportions that make all the difference. I highly recommend watching the full presentation above by Barbara O’Neill, as she explains what our cells need to function properly.
According to Barbara O’Neill and Dr Steven Lin, natural salts like Celtic sea salt and Pink Himalayan rock salt are actually beneficial and here is why:
Different kinds of salt:
There are four different kinds of salt:
- Iodized salt
- Natural sea salt
- Celtic sea salt
- Pink Himalayan rock salt.
Iodized salt:
Iodized salt has had all the minerals removed except sodium at roughly 50% and chloride at roughly 30%. They then bleach it and add aluminium. This has very little nutritional value, and the imbalance of the high sodium content creates high blood pressure. High blood pressure happens when the sodium inside the cell is higher than the potassium levels. Once this happens the cell starts to swell. The combination of the sodium and chloride can also kill the taste buds in high concentration. This has the effect of causing you to sprinkle more and more salt on your food with less flavour coming through.
Natural Sea Salt:
Natural sea salt contains 92 minerals including a small about of iodine. It is very flavourful, but can be hard to find. The combination of all the minerals that natural sea salts have balance themselves out, so the sodium and chloride are no longer harmful.
Celtic Sea Salt:
According to loveseasalt.com, “Celtic sea salt has been produced by the same hand methods of “salt farming” off the Brittany Coast of France for centuries. It is naturally air and sun dried in clay ponds and gathered by hand with wooden tools such that it has a living enzyme content.”
Celtic sea salt contains 82 minerals. It also contains three types of magnesium: chloride, bromide, and sulfate. These types of magnesium draw water to them, which helps the water to stay in the cell. the quickest way to absorb water is to put a grain of course Celtic sea salt on the tongue and then drink 1/2 a glass of water. Half an hour later drink the other 1/2 of water. It’s important to spread your 8 – 8oz glasses of water a day over the entire day. By having one grain of course Celtic sea salt every time you have a glass of water, your cells will be able to retain the water longer, and stop you from running to the washroom all day long. If you can only find fine Celtic sea salt, use the tiniest of pinches.
Pink Himalayan rock salt:
Pink Himalayan rock salt is mined from the Khewra Salt Mines in Pakistan. The mining is done by hand using traditional established methods that do not harm the environment around it.
The Pink Himalayan rock salt contains 75 minerals which is great, but doesn’t contain all three types of magnesium, so it doesn’t hold onto the water as well as the Celtic sea salt does. It is still very nutritious and can stand in for Celtic sea salt if you can’t get access to it. It will also help you retain water much better than iodized salt can.
Benefits of Sea and Rock Salt:
In Dr. Steven Lin’s article, 5 Reasons Why Salt is Good for You According to Medicine https://www.drstevenlin.com/salt-good-for-you/, he lists out several benefits for responsible salt consumption. These include helping you stay hydrated, good vascular health, balancing electrolytes, preventing muscle cramps, supporting a healthy nervous system, and improving your sleep. Check out his article for more details.
One of the causes of headaches is dehydration. Before reaching for your pain relief bottle of choice, try putting a grain of sea salt on your tongue and slowly drink a glass of water over a 15 minute period. After an hour, have another glass. This method also helps with joint pain. When the body is dehydrated, it will pull moisture from the lips and joints first. The lack of lubrication in the joints is what causes the pain. The key to reducing the pain is getting the water to stay put. Having the grain of salt with your water helps that water stay where you want it; in the cells.
Another benefit of having a grain of salt with your water, is that it makes the water taste better! For me the water tastes sweeter with the salt than without it.
Electrolyte drinks:
Sodium also the key ingredient in electrolyte drinks that athletes use after their workouts and games. You can save yourself money by making your electrolyte drinks at home. The following recipe has worked wonders for our migraines brought on by heat stroke, sun stroke, or dehydration.
- 1 glass of water
- Juice of 1/2 a lemon
- 1/8 to 1/4 of Celtic Sea Salt or Pink Himalayan Rock Salt
- 2 tsp raw liquid honey
- Mix all the ingredients together, and slowly drink.
In Conclusion:
In conclusion, I hope you will see the importance of sea salt and water for your health. It’s such an easy change to your diet that will provide incredible benefits for your body and how you experience life!
